May 5th – Legislative Day & Kick-off to Tourism Week

NJTIA along with event co-sponsors, the NJ Amusement Assoc., the NJ Restaurant Assoc. and the NJ Hotel & Lodging Association will host a Legislative Day Event & Press Conference in conjunction with the Sectary of State’s Office at the State House Annex on May 5th.  The purpose of the event is the launch Tourism Week May 12 – May 16, 2008, as well as a forum  discussion about the state of the tourism industry in NJ.  Invitations will be sent out to the members of the sponsoring organizations; and will include the finalized schedule for the day & other important event details.

Please mark your calendar! 

We hope to see you in Trenton at the State House Annex on May 5th.

Hotels seen as way to help build tourism in New Jersey

A push is on to build tourism in Gloucester County, N.J., by building new hotels, but some wonder whether the plan will work. Tourism advocates say they can sell the region as a great place to stay that has easy access to Philadelphia and Atlantic City, and a 74-room Hampton Inn and a 64-room Holiday Inn Express are planned. Global travel boom passing U.S. by

While travel around the world is getting increasingly popular, the U.S. is losing out on the boom for a variety of reasons, including greed and fear, writes Eric Lucas in this Los Angeles Times opinion piece. Pinnacle may drop plans for $2B Atlantic City casino

Pinnacle Entertainment says it may have to walk away from plans for a $2 billion mega-casino project on Atlantic City's Boardwalk if lending conditions don't improve. The company's CEO, Daniel Lee, said he does expect the credit markets to improve, but if they don't, "we won't build." Newsday (Long Island, N.Y.)/Associated Press (2/26)

Explaining value is paramount to making the sale

Knowing the ins and outs of your own product line isn't going to impress prospects if you can't also explain how their business will specifically benefit from your particular offering, says consultant Rick Johnson. Atlantic City turns to fine food to lure visitors

Atlantic City is following Las Vegas' example, offering fine food to help attract visitors to a city known primarily for gambling. The city is already upgrading by offering luxury shops and renovating the Boardwalk, and celebrity chefs such as Bobby Flay, who also has restaurants in New York and Las Vegas, are coming to town. Congress needs to act on temporary worker visas ASAP

Small businesses that depend on an influx of immigrants for temporary summer jobs face a shortage of workers this year because the temporary visa bill is held up in Congress. Some 20% of the nation's small businesses have jobs they have been unable to fill, and 12% report that finding qualified labor is their biggest problem, according to the National Federation of Independent Business.
